University Vaccine Requirements
Many universities require proof of specific vaccinations for enrollment: MMR (2 doses), meningococcal ACWY (required by many US and UK universities for dorm residents), varicella (2 doses or proof of prior infection), Tdap booster, hepatitis B (some universities), and TB screening (Mantoux or IGRA). Check your destination university's health requirements well in advance — some vaccines need multiple doses over several weeks.
Health Insurance
Your home country health insurance may not cover you abroad. Options: university-provided student health plans (often mandatory), European Health Insurance Card (EHIC/GHIC) for EU students in the EU, international student health insurance, or global health insurance. Verify coverage for: doctor visits, prescriptions, hospitalization, emergency evacuation, mental health services, and dental care.
Mental Health
Studying abroad is exciting but also stressful: homesickness, language barriers, academic pressure, and cultural adjustment. Most universities offer counseling services — locate them during orientation. Build a social network early. Maintain healthy sleep, exercise, and eating habits. If you take psychiatric medication, bring enough supply for the full term plus a prescription in the generic name for refills abroad.
Sexual Health
STIs are a real risk for students abroad. Pack condoms (quality may vary in some countries). Consider HPV vaccination if not already vaccinated (recommended up to age 26). Know where to access local sexual health clinics. If you are on contraception, bring enough supply and carry the generic name for refills.
Alcohol and Drug Safety
Alcohol laws, drinking cultures, and drug policies vary greatly. Know the local legal limits, never accept drinks from strangers, and be aware that drug penalties can be severe in many countries (including imprisonment). Alcohol poisoning and drink spiking are real risks in student environments abroad.
Travel Vaccines for Your Region
Depending on your destination: hepatitis A (recommended for most developing countries), typhoid (South Asia, Africa, Latin America), Japanese encephalitis (rural East/Southeast Asia), rabies (if you'll be hiking or in contact with animals), and yellow fever (sub-Saharan Africa, tropical South America). Start vaccinations at least 6 weeks before departure.
