Post-Travel

After Your Trip

Feeling unwell after traveling? Some tropical diseases have long incubation periods. Learn which symptoms to watch for and when to seek medical help.

Important

Always tell your doctor about your recent travel history, including specific countries visited and dates. Some diseases have incubation periods of weeks to months.

Common post-travel symptoms

Fever after travel

Seek emergency care immediately

Fever within 3 months of returning from a malaria-risk area is a medical emergency until proven otherwise. Also consider dengue, typhoid, and chikungunya.

Persistent diarrhea

Diarrhea lasting more than 2 weeks after return may indicate parasitic infection (giardia, amoeba) and requires stool testing.

Skin rash or lesions

New rashes after tropical travel may indicate cutaneous larva migrans, leishmaniasis, or allergic reactions to insect bites.

Respiratory symptoms

Persistent cough or breathing difficulties after travel may indicate tuberculosis, histoplasmosis, or post-travel respiratory infections.

Unexplained fatigue

Prolonged fatigue after travel can be a sign of hepatitis, mononucleosis, or post-infectious syndrome.

Jaundice (yellowing)

Seek emergency care immediately

Yellow skin or eyes after travel is a red flag for hepatitis A/B/E or severe malaria. Seek immediate medical attention.
